What is API 5L X42?

API 5L GR. X42 pipe is used as line pipe of oil and gas transmission. It is higher grade than GR.B, with more strict requirements in chemical and mechanical properties.

Grade X42 is available in two types: PSL1, PSL2

For X42 PSL1 type, the delivery conditions includes as rolled (R), normalizing rolled, thermomechanical rolled and formed, normalizing formed, normalized, and tempered or quenched and tempered.

In case API 5L X42 PSL2, delivery condition is M (thermomechanical rolled or formed), N (Normalizing), Q (Quenched).

API 5L X42 ERW pipe means electric resistance welded pipe. Electric resistance welding pipe is manufactured by rolling metal and then welding it longitudinally across its length. It has a welded joint in its cross-section.

How to Identify Seamless or ERW Pipes?

To identify that a pipe supplied is seamless or ERW, the simplest way is read the marking on the side of the pipe.

The letter S means seamless, and F means furnace but welded, E is electrical resist welded.
