Carbon steel can be divided into low carbon steel, medium carbon steel and high carbon steel. Low carbon steel means the content of carbon is lower than 0.25%, medium carbon steel contains carbon between 0.25% to 0.6%, and high carbon steel carbon contents is usually larger than 0.6%. 20# carbon steel pipe belongs to low carbon steel, 20 means the carbon content is 0.2%. It is high quality carbon steel with good toughness, plasticity and weldability but low strength.

A105 VS 20# Steel Pipe

A105 is American standard low carbon steel for forged pipe fittings, its mechanical properties is similar with 20# but the strength is higher. As line pipe materials, A105 can replace 20# steel but 20# steel cannot complete replace A105 because of the strength difference. The corrosion resistance of 20# steel is better than A105. Therefore, A105 usually is used as material of forged flanges and pipe fittings, while 20# is used as materials for line pipe, valves and other equipments.

Carbon Steel Pipe Sizes

There are three ways to describe the diameter of 20# steel pipes.

NPS: Refers to Nominal Pipe Size, it is a north American set of standard sizes for pipes. The sizes are measured in inch.
DN: European and international designation equivalent to NPS, its unit is mm, see ISO 6708. NB is also frequently used interchangeably with DN.
OD: OD is the outside diameter of the pipe. For NPS 1/8 to 12, NPS and OD values are different. For NPS 14 and up, they are equal. The unit of OD can be inch or mm.
